Just in time for autumn walks, the newest addition to the Statesville Greenway System is officially opened.

A $550,000 grant from the North Carolina Department of Transportation funded the paving of the 2.2-mile greenway section and the construction of three bridges that extends from Free Nancy Lane off Sullivan Rd. past the Statesville Fitness and Activity Center and Statesville Soccer Park to E. Broad St.
The City of Statesville oversaw the engineering and planning of the construction and administration of the grant. Locke-Lane Construction Inc. of Statesville was the contractor for the project which consisted of clearing, grading, asphalt and concrete paving, and placement of retaining walls and bridge abutments to support three steel bridges.
“It was a well-designed and coordinated project on behalf of the City of Statesville,” said Andrew Sherrill, president of Lock-Lane. “We were thrilled to be a part of such a highly visible project that will remain a permanent fixture to the City for many years.”
This section of the greenway is accessible from the parking lot at the old movie theaters on Free Nancy Lane, the SFAC, the end of Carolyn St. off Davie Ave. and the Statesville Soccer Park.
